Founders

Tyler DenkCo-Founder & CEO

Previously a software engineer at Morning Brew, where he helped scale the newsletter to millions of subscribers before leaving to build beehiiv. His deep understanding of newsletter growth mechanics directly shaped beehiiv's product philosophy.

He built much of Morning Brew's internal newsletter infrastructure, which became the direct inspiration for beehiiv's feature set.

Benjamin HargettCo-Founder & CTO

Also a former Morning Brew engineer who worked alongside Tyler Denk building internal tools and audience growth systems. He co-founded beehiiv to productize the newsletter stack they had perfected at Morning Brew.

His hands-on experience scaling a newsletter to millions of subscribers meant beehiiv was built battle-tested from day one.

Jake HurdCo-Founder

Another Morning Brew alumnus who joined Denk and Hargett in founding beehiiv, contributing early-stage product and go-to-market expertise. He helped shape beehiiv's early growth and customer success strategy.

All three co-founders met and worked together at Morning Brew, making beehiiv a rare case of an entire founding team coming from the same prior employer.

Competitors

Substack

Substack focuses on paid subscription writing with a built-in reader network but offers fewer growth and monetization tools compared to beehiiv's all-in-one platform.

ConvertKit (Kit)

ConvertKit targets a broader creator audience with robust email automation but lacks beehiiv's native newsletter-specific growth mechanics like referral programs and ad network.

Ghost

Ghost is an open-source publishing platform with strong SEO and membership tools but requires more technical setup and doesn't offer beehiiv's managed ad marketplace.

Mailchimp

Mailchimp is a legacy email marketing tool aimed at businesses rather than creators, lacking beehiiv's newsletter-first growth and monetization ecosystem.

Beehaw / Letterhead

Smaller niche newsletter monetization tools that lack beehiiv's full-stack creator platform capabilities.

How They're Doing

Thriving

beehiiv is in a strong growth phase, serving over 28,000 customers and rapidly expanding its platform beyond newsletters into podcasts, digital products, and community features. The company raised a Series B in 2024, signaling continued investor confidence. Its Tranco rank of #6,212 confirms meaningful and growing web traffic relative to its niche.

Surpassed 28,000 customers with a 4.9/5 user rating

Raised Series B funding in 2024 to accelerate product and growth

Expanded platform to include podcasts, digital products, and community sites

Prognosis

Bullish

beehiiv is well-positioned to capitalize on the continued creator economy boom, with a differentiated all-in-one approach that makes it stickier than single-use tools. Its Series B gives it runway to deepen AI features, expand its ad network, and potentially enter international markets. The main risks are intensifying competition from Substack's network effects and the possibility of big-tech platforms (e.g., LinkedIn, Meta) building competing newsletter tools.

Opportunities

Expanding the beehiiv Ad Network to create a premium newsletter advertising marketplace

Growing into podcasting and community as creators seek consolidated platforms

International expansion as creator economy grows globally

AI-powered content and audience tools becoming a key differentiator

Risks

Substack's built-in reader network creates strong lock-in for writers who want discoverability

Big-tech platforms like LinkedIn and Meta investing heavily in creator monetization tools

Commoditization of email tooling could compress pricing power

Customer concentration risk if top publishers migrate to custom solutions
